This qualitative interview study explored how adoptive parents use and adapt life story books to support communicative openness within their families. Eleven adoptive parents in England were interviewed about the life story books they had received from adoption agencies, including how these were edited, remade, or supplemented in everyday family life.
The study examined in particular the role of photos, illustrations, and visual communication in shaping narrative identity, emotional understanding, and conversations about birth family relationships. Findings have informed subsequent Research through Design work investigating tangible and visual tools to support life story at home.
