Digital Teaware

artefact · 2013
Notes

Interactive Teaware was developed during a 12-week internship with Tim Regan at Microsoft Research Cambridge. The work emerged from engagement with residents and staff at a care home in the south of England, focusing on how everyday domestic objects might support shared reminiscence and conversation. The teaware incorporates a decorative lustre that functions as a sensor, detecting subtle movements of a cup on its saucer. These movements trigger words to appear at different locations on a tablecloth, drawn from residents’ reminiscences and selected poems. The resulting text fragments combine to form varied descriptions open to personal and shared interpretation. In use, participants were able to gently prompt conversation by moving their teacup, particularly during quieter moments.
